The government announced that Kampong Chhnang province is open defecation free (ODF).
Speaking at a workshop on the results of the project to remove open defecation from the province recently, Chrun Theravat, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Rural Development, declared the province ODF.
He added that the national ODF verification team had been sent from May 15 to 17 at the request of the provincial governor to confirm that all villages, communes and districts had achieved ODF status.
He lauded provincial authorities for achieving this milestone and understanding the health risks of open defecation.
“The national budget for eliminating open defecation has expanded a lot every year, so we have to work together to keep the environment clean, hygienic, and prevent open defecation and avoid infections,” he said.
Chin Ratha, director of Kampong Chhnang department of rural development, said that from 2020 to the present, there has been a lot of work to implement the rural sanitation programme in collabration with commune and district authorities. Many NGOS such as Plan International, WaterAid Cambodia, World Vision, and Life With Dignity are also participating in the programme.
He added that the Kampong Chhnang provincial authorities coordinated with district and commune administrations, middle-level working groups, philanthropists and partner organisations with the aim of building toilets for vulnerable families.
“We have used commune funds and inspected and monitored the construction of toilets in people’s backyards, updated the data on toilets and set the direction to achieve the ODF target of 100% in Kampong Chhnang province in this year,” he said.

He also said that last year, the ministry targeted five provinces for ODF status in 2023 – Kampong Chhnang, Prey Veng, Svay Rieng, Kampong Speu and Kep. Three provinces have declared ODF status well ahead of the planned deadline with Svay Rieng being first then Prey Veng, Kandal followed by Kep.
Kampong Chhnang Health Department director Prak Von said that the Ministry of Rural Development was very supportive with the province achieving the ODF target.
He added that ODF in Kampong Chhnang has also improved people’s health and the environment, especially in terms of stopping infectious disease caused by people defecating near their houses.
Von also said that he was very pleased with Kampong Chhnang authorities and other organisations working in the ODF programme in villages, communes and districts and achieving the Ministry of Rural Development’s goal.
“I laud the partner organisations and national level authorities for promoting hygiene in the province,” he said.
In January, this year Suos Kong, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Rural Development, said that to promote hygiene, the ministry had launched a national mechanism in collaboration with the sub-national level authorities to implement the ODF programme. From 2007 to now, the ministry has reached 6,028 villages, 472 communes and 39 districts nationwide.
